Learning , Estimation , and the Stability of Rational Expectations

چکیده

The stability of the rational expectations equilibrium of a simple asset market model is studied in a situation where a group of traders learn about the relationship between the price and return on the asset using ordinary least squares estimation, and then use their estimates in predicting the return from the price. The model which they estimate is a well-specified model of the rational expectations equilibrium, but a misspecified model of the situation in which the traders are learning. It is shown that for appropriate values of a stability parameter the situation converges almost surely to the rational expectations equilibrium, Journal of Economic Literature Classification Numbers: 022, 026.

The Stability of Macroeconomic Systems with Bayesian Learners

We study abstract macroeconomic systems in which expectations play an important role. Consistent with the recent literature on recursive learning and expectations, we replace the agents in the economy with econometricians. Unlike the recursive learning literature, however, the econometricians in the analysis here are Bayesian learners. We are interested in the extent to which expectational stab...

Expectations in Macroeconomics: Adaptive versus Eductive Learning1

Rational expectations solutions to macroeconomic models are equilibria requiring the coordination of expectations, and one can investigate the local stability of these solutions under alternative learning rules. Eductive (mental) approaches to learning have somewhat stricter stability conditions than do adaptive (statistical) approaches, as we illustrate using three economic models. The expecta...

Learning, Rationality, the Stability of Equilibrium and Macroeconomics

Equilibrium and Macroeconomics. The issue of how agents learn to form rational expectations has received increasing attention lately. The approach taken in many papers treats model stability as a problem in learning. In reviewing this literature, the author examines carefully the assumptions about individual behavior required for learning to form rational expectations. The meaning of rationalit...

Testing for Stochastic Non- Linearity in the Rational Expectations Permanent Income Hypothesis

The Rational Expectations Permanent Income Hypothesis implies that consumption follows a martingale. However, most empirical tests have rejected the hypothesis. Those empirical tests are based on linear models. If the data generating process is non-linear, conventional tests may not assess some of the randomness properly. As a result, inference based on conventional tests of linear models can b...

Learning Rational Expectations: The Finite State Case

This paper is devoted to the question of whether traders can learn rational expectations from repeated observations of market data in a stationary environment with finitely many exogenous states of the world. The learning problem is placed in the context of an iterative adjustment process which achieves equilibrium if traders have rational expectations. The main result is that even if traders b...
